Statement of Philosophy
If you give a woman a fish, you have fed her a meal.
If you teach her to fish, she is able to feed herself and her family.
W.E. teaches women (and men) to "fish" by helping them discover the keys to unlocking their potential.
General Information
In July 2002, a new non-profit organization, Women Empowered To Make Healthy Choices Inc., (W. E.) opened its doors. As an education and support organization (with 501 (c) (3) status) its goal is to address the needs of a large population of women and girls living on the island of Martha’s Vineyard.
Feeling overwhelmed by the stress in their lives, they often experience feelings of anxiety, fear, frustration, helplessness and thus find themselves unable to effect the measure of control necessary to insure a quality of life they perceive to be acceptable.
W. E. offers free education and support in the form of instruction in these basic life skill areas:

problem solving

decision making

balancing a checkbook

planning a family budget

coping skills

basic computer

basic sewing

conversational English for non-English speaking people

circles for women/girls
In the short time we have been accepting clients we have assisted more than one hundred clients. Today these individuals have moved from a place of anxiety and fear to a position of strength and confidence.
On the following page you will find four profiles of women we have served (used with permission) and their comments about the changes in their lives. You will also be invited to become an "Island Angel" and help support us in our work. It has been a difficult time in our Nation's history to establish a sustaining donor support base. Due to the aftermath of 9/11, the very sluggish economy and volatile stock market, as well as the insecurity brought about by the war in Iraq, funding new non profit organizations has been difficult. Adding to this already stressful picture, our state has experienced stiff budget cuts that have been reflected in a reduction of monies available for social services. As a result the service W. E. offers is even more vital to the island women.
Please read on and hear the voices of four women we have served. Then give thoughtful consideration to becoming an "Island Angel". You too can become a woman helping women, an islander helping islanders.
