In Their Own Words

"In Their Own Words" is a new addition to our web site. On this page you will read the stories of the journey our women are on. They are used with written permission of the client. In some instances the names are omitted or changed at the client's request because of the sensitive nature of their individual story. Our plan is to add a new story each month so you, our readers and donors, will have an opportunity to share in the joy of accomplishment that our clients are experiencing. If you wish to pass a word of encouragement along to any particular client, as your personal feed-back to their story, please feel free to use our e-mail response page to do so. We will make sure the client receives a copy or your e-mail. We hope this page will lift your spirits and bring a smile to your face.

Evette's Story

One Woman’s View From Offshore

One day last spring I was looking through the newspaper, and I saw an advertisement for "Women Empowered".  At the time I had no idea what it was, but I was in a bad place in my own skin.  I decided to give it a try!  I called the phone number listed.  A woman answered the phone and she said, “I have an open appointment today, can you make it?”  I was surprised and relieved at the same time, so I said yes!  I was on my way!   This was the beginning.  Finally, Evette was going to get "IT" together.

We began by taking a look at my checkbook.  We discussed how to organize all the piles of important receipts and bills and how to balance my checkbook.  I caught on to that pretty fast.  Then it was on to how to weed out the mounds of clothing that hasn't been worn for years.  Basically, I needed to learn "how to" change my "pack rat" mentality.  That does not happen over night.  We worked at it a little bit at a time, so that it would not be too "overwhelming" to get it done all at once.  I am amazed to say that six months later I feel so much better, I am not yet perfect (that really isn’t my goal) but I see light in the "open spaces" in my home!  I actually have a tabletop that’s not cluttered with papers!  The volunteer at "Women Empowered" even repaired a pair of slacks for me, because I don't have a sewing machine!

Recently, I began preparing a resume’.  It wasn't long before I realized that I needed help.  I called "Women Empowered" again.  "No problem", she said, “can you be here tomorrow?”  I said I could, and after two visits we had a beautiful resume’.  A resume’ I am proud of, and am using in my job search!

I am actively searching for a better job, my life is easier and I am more organized every day. "Women Empowered” has armed me, with the skills and confidence I need to keep moving forward and making positive changes in my life.  If I feel like I am getting "stuck", I know I can call "Women Empowered”.  Their volunteers will be there willing to help me help myself over any barriers, and keep moving forward in a "positive" direction.

You are a very important service to the Island Community!  Thank-You Women Empowered!
